SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Syracuse Police Department is warning residents about a recent increase in canine parvovirus cases, urging pet owners to take precautions to protect their dogs.
In a community alert issued Tuesday, the department’s Animal Control Unit said the highly contagious virus is spreading in the area, particularly affecting puppies and dogs that have not been vaccinated.
Parvo is transmitted through contact with infected animals or contaminated surfaces and can be deadly if not treated quickly.
The department advised owners to ensure pets are up to date on vaccinations and to avoid interactions with unfamiliar or unvaccinated dogs.
“If you believe your dog may have been exposed or is showing symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately,” the department said.
