College Park, MD – A 52-year-old Temple Hills man was arrested after allegedly pointing a gun at another driver during a road rage confrontation on the Capital Beltway.

The incident happened during rush hour Wednesday on the inner loop near Annapolis Road, when a caller reported being threatened at gunpoint by another motorist.

State Troopers later pulled over a white Nissan Titan and say they recovered a loaded firearm in the vehicle.

Stephen Eric Scroggins was taken into custody without incident and is facing multiple charges including first- and second-degree assault and use of a firearm during a felony crime. He was processed at the Prince George’s County Division of Corrections and released Thursday after posting a $2,500 bail.

Investigators say the confrontation was reported around 4:20 p.m. on Wednesday when a motorist dialed 911 to report that another driver had pointed a firearm at them during a traffic altercation on I-495. Troopers from the College Park Barrack, along with members of the Maryland State Police Highway Gun Crimes Initiative, launched a swift investigation.

Officers executed a search warrant and stopped Scroggins while he was behind the wheel of his vehicle, recovering a loaded gun from inside. No injuries were reported, and police say the arrest was made without resistance.

The Maryland State Police continue to pursue gun violence cases along state highways and are asking the public to come forward with tips in a number of ongoing investigations. In particular, they are still seeking leads in the unsolved murders of Delonte Hicks, Charles Marks, and Nyah Hairston.
