ALEXANDRIA, VA – A man taken into custody after reportedly causing a disturbance in an Alexandria apartment building died at the city’s detention center shortly after his arrest, prompting a multi-agency investigation into the in-custody death.
The incident began around 5:07 p.m. on Thursday, when multiple 911 callers reported a man yelling and banging on doors while running through the halls of a building on the 2800 block of North Beauregard Street.
Alexandria Police officers responded and encountered an adult male who appeared intoxicated and was disturbing residents.
After attempts to calm the situation, officers arrested the man for public intoxication and transported him to the Alexandria Adult Detention Center.
While in custody, the man began experiencing medical issues, and officers along with medical personnel attempted life-saving measures. Despite those efforts, the man was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
The Virginia Office of the Medical Examiner will determine the cause and manner of death.
