Not just locals only anymore: Wildwood kicks off ‘second season’ with beach festivals monster trucks and fall boardwalk fun

WILDWOOD, NJ — Tuesday — As the summer crowds thin and the ocean air cools, the Wildwoods are flipping the script on the shore season with the launch of its bustling “Second Season,” packing the fall calendar with airshows, monster trucks, beach races, and boardwalk events that keep the energy high well past Labor Day.

Starting in September, the iconic New Jersey shore destination swaps peak-season traffic for smaller crowds, off-season lodging rates, and an events lineup stretching into winter. Leading the charge is the Thunder Over the Waves Airshow, set to mark the unofficial end of summer and ignite the fall with a sky-high spectacle over the Wildwoods beaches.

Despite the season shift, the area’s award-winning boardwalk and wide, free beaches remain open and active. Amusement piers will continue weekend operations into early October, and local restaurants, wineries, and breweries are unveiling autumn-inspired menus with fewer lines and more elbow room.

Visitors this fall can still catch live music, classic cars, competitive races, and holiday cheer. September alone features the North Wildwood Surf Fishing Tournament (Sept. 5–6), the Irish Fall Festival (Sept. 19–21), and the adrenaline-pumping Monsters on the Beach Monster Truck Races (Sept. 26–27).

The fall energy rolls into October with signature events like The Race of Gentlemen, a vintage-style beach drag race set for October 3–5, and themed weekends like the Wildwoods 50s, 60s, & 70s Weekend on October 17–18. As the holidays approach, December brings tree lightings, parades, and the Boardwalk Basketball Classic (Dec. 26–31), keeping the island bustling well into winter break.

The Boardwalk, recently resurfaced and ranked the Best in the U.S. by USA Today’s 10Best Readers’ Choice, remains the centerpiece of activity. With 38 blocks of shops, food, and attractions overlooking New Jersey’s top-rated beaches, the Wildwoods’ post-summer charm is anything but sleepy.

Surrounding wineries, just minutes away, enter peak grape harvesting season, offering seasonal tastings and outdoor experiences that capitalize on the area’s climate — one compared to the famed Bordeaux region of France.

While the beach towels and umbrellas may start to disappear, fall in the Wildwoods is anything but a cooldown.
