Man killed in Northeast DC alley hit-and-run as police hunt two drivers

WASHINGTON, DC – A man was found dead early Thursday morning after being struck by two vehicles in a Northeast DC alley, with both drivers fleeing the scene, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Officers from the Fifth District responded just after 5:20 a.m. on August 14 to the rear alley of the 1600 block of Benning Road, where they discovered an adult male unconscious and not breathing. DC Fire and EMS responded, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has been identified as 34-year-old Deon Cherry, who had no fixed address.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Cherry was struck by two vehicles in the alleyway. Police said neither driver remained on the scene, and both fled before authorities arrived.

The department’s Major Crash Unit is leading the investigation and is asking anyone with information to contact police at (202) 727-9099 or anonymously text tips to 50411.
