New flashing beacon installed to boost pedestrian safety near Lenape Park

CRANFORD, NJ — A new Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) has been activated at a busy intersection near Lenape Park, aimed at protecting pedestrians crossing Kenilworth Boulevard, according to Cranford Police.

The beacon, installed by the department’s Traffic Maintenance crew, is part of a broader initiative to improve pedestrian safety throughout Cranford. The new RRFB alerts drivers with high-intensity flashing lights when activated by pedestrians preparing to cross.

Officials are reminding pedestrians to press the button before entering the crosswalk to ensure the lights are triggered. The department emphasized that both drivers and walkers share responsibility in ensuring safety at the crossing.

The intersection serves as a popular entry point into Lenape Park and sees both foot traffic and vehicle flow throughout the day. The beacon is expected to enhance visibility and reduce the risk of accidents in the area.
