Stabbing suspect arrested after brutal Minnesota Avenue assault

DC man arrested in connection with Minnesota Avenue stabbing attack

WASHINGTON, DC – A 41-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a stabbing that left one person injured during an assault in Northeast earlier this summer, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

On May 30, just before 9 p.m., officers responded to the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast, for reports of a stabbing. Investigators say an adult male was attacked by multiple suspects and stabbed during the assault. The group fled before police arrived.

The victim was transported by DC Fire and EMS to a hospital, where he was treated for injuries described as non-life-threatening.

Following an investigation, police obtained a DC Superior Court arrest warrant. On August 1, officers arrested Cornell Shumate, 41, of Northeast DC. He has been charged with Assault with Significant Bodily Injury (Knife).

Police said the case remains under investigation and encouraged anyone with additional information to contact the department’s tip line.
