Long Beach man convicted of murder in fatal 2023 shooting at Channel Park Homes

MINEOLA, NY – A Long Beach man was found guilty Tuesday of fatally shooting a 33-year-old outside the Channel Park Homes in 2023, after a jury determined he fired six rounds and struck the victim as he lay dying.

Nassau County prosecutors said 52-year-old Ronnie Sutton was convicted of second-degree murder following a jury trial that began August 6. The jury deliberated for four and a half hours before returning the verdict on August 19. Sutton had previously been convicted of two weapons charges tied to the same incident.

On April 7, 2023, around 10:30 p.m., Sutton was riding his bike through the Sycamore Court parking lot when he argued with the victim, 33-year-old Shawn Usher, who was standing by his car. Prosecutors said Sutton pulled a gun from his jacket and opened fire. As Usher ran, Sutton chased him and continued shooting, striking him five times. After Usher collapsed, Sutton pistol-whipped him twice in the head before leaving the scene on his bicycle.

The victim was transported by the Long Beach Fire Department to Mount Sinai South Nassau Hospital, where he was pronounced dead less than an hour later.

Sutton was arrested on April 19, 2023, following an investigation by Long Beach and Nassau County police. Officers later recovered the firearm hidden in a bush on East Market Street.

He faces up to 40 years to life in prison when sentenced on October 3, 2025, before Judge Robert Schwartz.
