Fugitive murder suspect arrested in Atlanta suburb as FBI intensifies Operation Summer Heat

Charlotte, NC — A man wanted for murder in North Carolina was captured in an Atlanta suburb this week as part of a sweeping federal crackdown on violent crime, the FBI announced Wednesday.

Dontae Harrison, who had been on the run after being charged with murder in Charlotte, was taken into custody on Monday by special agents with FBI Atlanta. The arrest was made in coordination with FBI Charlotte and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department as part of “Operation Summer Heat,” a multi-agency effort targeting violent offenders across the country.

Harrison had been considered a fugitive since charges were filed in connection to a homicide case under investigation in Mecklenburg County. Officials have not released details about the homicide, citing the ongoing investigation, but confirmed Harrison was identified as the primary suspect and had evaded capture for weeks before being tracked to Georgia.

The FBI said Harrison was located and arrested without incident in a suburban neighborhood outside Atlanta. He will be extradited to North Carolina to face murder charges.

“By harnessing the reach of the FBI across jurisdictions,” the agency posted on social media, “this violent fugitive is now off the streets.”

“Operation Summer Heat,” which began earlier this summer, aims to reduce violent crime by targeting repeat offenders, gang members, and fugitives across state lines. The initiative brings together local police departments, federal agents, and regional task forces to accelerate the capture of high-priority suspects.

Law enforcement agencies have not yet released the timeline for Harrison’s extradition or his initial court appearance in North Carolina.
