Fugitive shot by federal officer during dramatic morning standoff in Worcester

Worcester, MA – A wanted man was shot by a Deputy U.S. Marshal Thursday morning in Worcester after allegedly attempting to ram law enforcement with a vehicle during a fugitive apprehension operation, officials confirmed.

The incident unfolded on Strathmore Road when members of the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, alongside the U.S. Marshals Service and detectives from the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office, attempted to arrest 23-year-old Chris Betances of Worcester on an active Superior Court warrant.

As officers approached, Betances reportedly tried to escape by accelerating his vehicle toward them. A Deputy Marshal, fearing for his safety, fired at Betances, striking him. Law enforcement at the scene immediately rendered medical aid before transporting him to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.
