SACRAMENTO, CA – The California Board of Parole Hearings has denied parole to Lyle Menendez, one day after his brother Erik was also denied release, in connection to the brutal 1989 murders of their parents, Jose and Kitty Menendez, in Beverly Hills.
Lyle Menendez appeared by video from Richard J. Donovan Correctional Facility, while Deputy District Attorney Ethan Milius presented the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office’s arguments remotely from Los Angeles.
The Board, acting independently from Erik’s hearing, cited Lyle’s continued rules violations in prison and lack of full accountability for the killings as grounds for denial. Psychological evaluations also concluded he poses a moderate risk if released.
District Attorney George Gascón’s office praised the Board’s decision, with DA Hochman stating that Lyle Menendez continues to present a public safety risk and has failed to accept responsibility, instead maintaining shifting narratives of self-defense.
Despite participation in rehabilitative programs, the Board determined those efforts did not outweigh the severity of the crime or Menendez’s conduct in custody.
The District Attorney’s Office said it will continue to oppose parole unless and until Lyle Menendez fully accepts responsibility for the killings. Parole may be reconsidered in the future under those conditions.
