Elkridge, MD – A confrontation outside a Green Valley Marketplace turned violent Thursday afternoon when a security guard opened fire on a man during a physical altercation, Howard County police confirmed.

The incident occurred around 12:40 p.m. in the 7200 block of Montgomery Road. Preliminary findings indicate the conflict began when one of the security guards became involved in a struggle with an adult male, resulting in the guard sustaining a head injury. A second guard on duty responded by firing his weapon, striking the man involved in the altercation.

Both the injured man and the wounded security guard were transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The armed guard who discharged his firearm was not injured and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation.
