Delaware man caught driving on rim charged with 4th DUI and multiple violations

Lewes, DE – A 54-year-old man with a history of drunk driving was arrested Friday night after state troopers found him driving the wrong way on a Sussex County road with a shredded tire, a revoked license, and no insurance, police said.

Nathaniel Spencer of Lewes was charged with his fourth offense DUI and a laundry list of traffic-related violations after a Delaware State Police trooper stopped his white Acura around 10 p.m. on Robinsonville Road. Authorities say Spencer was driving eastbound in the westbound lane before swerving back into the correct lane—prompting the traffic stop.

As the trooper activated emergency lights, Spencer exited the vehicle on his own. The officer noted visible signs of impairment and detected a strong odor of alcohol. Spencer was ordered back into the car as the trooper noticed the vehicle’s front tire was completely shredded and the car was riding on the rim.

A field sobriety test confirmed signs of impairment, and Spencer was taken into custody. A computer check revealed that Spencer was under pre-trial conditions that prohibited him from operating or being in control of a vehicle. His license was also revoked, the car was uninsured, and its registration had expired, according to police.

Spencer was taken to Troop 7, where he was formally charged and arraigned. He is now being held at Sussex Correctional Institution on $8,400 cash bond.
