Drunk driver with child spits on deputy after second DUI arrest in Stafford County

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA — A Culpeper woman is behind bars after allegedly driving drunk with a child in the car, then attacking deputies during a late-night encounter on Richmond Highway.

Just after 10 p.m. Saturday, a Stafford County deputy spotted a Mazda parked in the right travel lane near Hope Road. When the deputy approached to investigate, he found 32-year-old Kayla Johnson in the passenger seat with a child beside her. Johnson initially claimed she ran out of gas, then backtracked, saying no one had been driving.

The deputy noted signs of intoxication and confirmed Johnson had a prior DUI and a revoked license. She was taken into custody due to her erratic behavior, and the child was turned over to a responsible adult.

During an attempt to conduct a blood draw to determine her blood alcohol level, Johnson became combative. Authorities say she spit on and kicked at a Sergeant, though the deputy was not injured. Her actions led to multiple charges, including child endangerment and assault on law enforcement.

Johnson now faces charges of second-offense DUI within five years, second-offense refusal to submit to testing, child endangerment, two counts of assault and battery on law enforcement, driving without a license, and illegally parking on a highway.

She was booked into the Rappahannock Regional Jail and is being held without bond.
