Man killed in Southeast DC hit-and-run as police search for SUV driver
Washington, DC – A 33-year-old man was killed in the early morning hours of August 18 after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Southern Avenue SE, and police say the driver fled the scene without stopping.
The deadly crash happened around 1:50 a.m. in the 900 block of Southern Avenue, Southeast. Officers from the Seventh District arrived to find an adult male lying unconscious in the street, suffering from trauma consistent with a vehicular impact. DC Fire and EMS attempted life-saving measures, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The victim has been identified as Robert Hilldrup, 33, of no fixed address.
Preliminary findings indicate Hilldrup was crossing midblock from west to east, outside of a designated crosswalk, when he was struck by a dark-colored SUV traveling northbound. Investigators say the SUV continued without stopping or identifying the driver, making this a felony hit-and-run case.
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Investigations Unit are actively investigating and urging anyone with information to come forward. The driver remains at large.
