Man struck and killed by SUV on I-695 in DC early Tuesday morning

Washington, DC – A 43-year-old man was hit and killed by an SUV while in the travel lanes of Interstate 695 in the early hours of Tuesday morning, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

The crash occurred around 1:20 a.m. on August 26. Officers responded to the scene and found the pedestrian, later identified as Efrain Chavez-Navarrate of Northwest DC, unconscious and not breathing. Despite life-saving efforts by medics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Chavez-Navarrate was in the roadway when a Toyota Rav4 traveling along I-695 struck him. The driver of the SUV remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

The incident shut down portions of the highway as detectives from MPD’s Major Crash Investigation Unit worked to collect evidence. Police have not released additional details about why Chavez-Navarrate was in the travel lane at the time.

The investigation remains ongoing.
