Atlantic City, NJ – A man was arrested Sunday morning after allegedly threatening an off-duty officer with a knife during a violent boardwalk confrontation that began when the officer intervened to stop what appeared to be a woman being dragged under the Boardwalk.
Just after 10 a.m. during the Seedorf/McMeekin Memorial 5K Run, Atlantic City Police Lieutenant James Herbert saw a man on the beach with a woman in a headlock, allegedly pulling her toward the underside of the Boardwalk near New York Avenue. Herbert, though off-duty and in civilian clothes, intervened and attempted to separate them while instructing a fellow runner to call 911.
The suspect, identified as 27-year-old Xontae Glass of Atlantic City, then walked with the woman up to the Boardwalk. Herbert followed closely as the situation escalated into a physical struggle.
According to police, during the confrontation, Glass brandished a pocket knife and threatened Herbert. At that moment, Northfield Police Department Captain Scott Pollak, who was also off-duty and present at the event, drew his legally carried off-duty firearm and ordered Glass to drop the knife.
Glass reportedly retreated, dropped the weapon, and ran off the Boardwalk. Witnesses directed responding officers to Glass’s hiding spot on the beach block of New York Avenue, where he was taken into custody without further incident.
During transport, Glass allegedly became combative, injuring Officer Aaron McKim. He is now facing charges including simple assault, aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Glass was remanded to the Atlantic County Justice Facility pending further proceedings.
