CRANFORD, NJ — Drivers who failed to hit the brakes at crosswalks — and pedestrians who didn’t follow the rules — were both slapped with warnings and citations during a pedestrian safety enforcement blitz across Cranford last week.
The Cranford Police Department deployed a decoy officer to walk through marked crosswalks at various intersections, targeting motorists who ignored pedestrian right-of-way laws. At the same time, officers cited pedestrians who crossed against signals or outside designated crosswalks.
The initiative, timed ahead of the upcoming school year, was part of a broader push to raise awareness about pedestrian safety and traffic law compliance. Police say the checkpoints were designed to hold both drivers and walkers accountable, reducing the risk of serious accidents in high-traffic areas.
According to the department, the joint enforcement action is a reminder that safety on Cranford’s roads depends on both sides of the crosswalk doing their part.
Officials said similar enforcement efforts may continue through the fall as schools reopen and pedestrian activity increases.
