Pedestrian killed on DC highway after being hit by Toyota

Man killed after being struck by SUV on I-695 in early morning crash

WASHINGTON, DC – A 43-year-old man was killed in the early hours of Monday morning after being struck by an SUV while walking on Interstate 695, launching a fatal crash investigation now underway in the nation’s capital.

Around 1:17 a.m. Monday, emergency crews responded to reports of a pedestrian down on the highway. When officers arrived on the westbound side of I-695, they found an adult male lying unconscious in the roadway, suffering from severe injuries consistent with being hit by a vehicle. Paramedics from DC Fire and EMS attempted lifesaving efforts, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

The victim has since been identified as Efrain Chavez-Navarrate, a resident of Northwest, DC.

According to the preliminary report, Chavez-Navarrate was in the travel lanes of I-695 when he was struck by a westbound Toyota RAV4. The driver of that vehicle remained at the scene and cooperated with responding officers.

The case is being investigated by the Major Crash Investigations Unit. Officials have not yet released further details about why Chavez-Navarrate was on the highway at that hour or whether any charges are being considered.

Police are asking for anyone who may have information about the crash to come forward by phone or text.
