Akron woman wins $50K Powerball prize after buying ticket for climbing jackpot
AKRON, OH – A Fairlawn convenience store stop turned into a $50,000 win for an Akron resident who typically plays Pick 3 but decided to grab Powerball tickets as the jackpot soared.
The winning ticket for the August 25 drawing was purchased at MAPCO in Fairlawn. It matched enough numbers to secure a third-tier $50,000 prize.
The winner said she checked her tickets on her phone and initially thought it was a mistake until scanning again confirmed the prize.
After mandatory state and federal taxes, she will take home $36,000. Plans for the winnings include paying off bills and taking a Hawaiian vacation.
The Powerball jackpot for the Wednesday drawing rose to $850 million, continuing its climb toward historic levels.
The Ohio Lottery has contributed more than $33 billion to public education since 1974.
