Stafford man arrested after crashing car with children inside, drugs found nearby

STAFFORD COUNTY, VA – A Stafford man is behind bars after deputies say he crashed his car into a guardrail with three children and a pregnant woman inside, then tried to ditch a backpack filled with drugs.

The crash happened around 7:14 p.m. Thursday on Raven Road, according to the Stafford County Sheriff’s Office. Responding Deputy R.W. Stamm found a Ford with significant damage and made contact with the driver, Zachary Fields, 25, along with a pregnant passenger and three children.

Fields told deputies he had become distracted by an object under his feet and struck the guardrail. He admitted to not wearing a seatbelt. The three children were taken to a nearby hospital as a precaution, while the female passenger suffered minor injuries.

During the investigation, a bystander told deputies he saw Fields make suspicious movements and toss something into nearby brush. Deputies recovered a backpack containing suspected controlled substances, drug distribution items, and Fields’ personal information. Additional drugs were found in the vehicle and on his person.

Fields was charged with possession of controlled substances, possession with intent to distribute, possession of drug paraphernalia, reckless driving, three counts of child neglect, and driving without a seatbelt. He was booked into Rappahannock Regional Jail without bond.
