Two arrested in separate Cumberland assault cases

Cumberland, MD – Cumberland Police made two arrests Friday in connection with separate assault cases that occurred earlier in the week, officials announced.

On August 29, officers arrested Andrew James Powell III, 36, of Cumberland, on a warrant stemming from an incident four days earlier. Police said Powell assaulted a woman in the 200 block of Park Street on August 25 before fleeing the area. The victim was found with injuries, and charges were later filed in Allegany County District Court. Powell was taken into custody, appeared before a District Court Commissioner, and posted a $5,000 bond. He faces charges of first- and second-degree assault.

Later the same day, at approximately 5:09 p.m., officers responded to the 300 block of Greene Street for another assault. Police reported that a man told officers he was assaulted by Victoria Leigh Alpert, 42, of Frostburg. The victim was observed with injuries. Alpert was arrested at the scene and taken before a District Court Commissioner, where she was released on a $5,000 unsecured personal bond. She has been charged with second-degree assault.
