SALEM TOWNSHIP, PA – Saturday — Authorities are searching for a former tenant who is now wanted for attempted homicide after an improvised explosive device detonated beneath a man operating a riding mower in Westmoreland County.
The Pennsylvania State Police Troop A – Kiski Valley is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of James Sever, 54, who is accused of rigging the explosive that injured a male victim on July 20 at 7901 State Route 22 in Salem Township.
According to investigators, the victim started his zero-turn mower when the device exploded. He survived, but police determined the blast came from a deliberately placed IED.
Sever, whose last known residence was on the property as a tenant, became the focus of the investigation. Authorities say they obtained an arrest warrant charging him with a string of serious felonies and misdemeanors including criminal attempt to commit homicide, multiple counts of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon of mass destruction, risking catastrophe, and related offenses.
Court records list Sever’s case under docket number MJ-10305CR-0000112-2025. Additional charges include unlawful manufacturing or possession of explosive devices, simple assault, and criminal trespassing.
Investigators believe Sever may be hiding in wooded areas or locations in New Alexandria, Derry Township, West Newton, or Kane. State Police warn he should be considered dangerous.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Pennsylvania State Police, and a cash reward of $5,000 remains available for tips that solve the case.
