OAKLAND, NJ – A utility pole fire knocked out electricity for a large section of town Sunday, leaving many residents in the dark and forcing the closure of a busy roadway.

The blaze sparked along Hiawatha Boulevard, prompting officials to shut down the stretch between Calumet Avenue and Seneca Avenue while emergency crews responded.

Orange and Rockland Electric is on site assessing the damage and coordinating repairs. Power restoration could take into tomorrow morning as workers replace the damaged equipment and restore service.

Residents in the outage zone remain without electricity as emergency crews continue repairs late into the night.
