Teen girl shot dead in Kansas City home as woman now charged in fatal attack

KANSAS CITY, MO — A 17-year-old girl was shot and killed inside a Kansas City home earlier this month, and prosecutors now say a woman connected to the scene by surveillance footage has been charged in the deadly shooting.

Jackson County Prosecutor Melesa Johnson announced Thursday that Bailey Lewis has been charged with second-degree felony murder, three counts of accessory armed criminal action, and two counts of accessory unlawful use of a weapon in connection with the August 9 homicide.

Kansas City police responded to the 3600 block of Norton Avenue on the night of the shooting, where they found the teenage victim inside a bathroom suffering from a gunshot wound to her throat. She was rushed to a nearby hospital but died from her injuries.

According to court records, witnesses described hearing a barrage of gunfire and saw bullets piercing the home’s front door, window, and living room wall. The victim, whose name has not been released due to her age, was struck while inside the residence.

Investigators say surveillance footage helped identify Lewis’s registered vehicle near the scene around the time of the shooting. Shortly after, she was recorded on video at a nearby gas station exiting the same car, tying her to the area in the moments following the deadly gunfire.

Lewis is currently being held on a $400,000 cash bond. All charges remain accusations unless she is found guilty or enters a guilty plea.
