SECAUCUS, NJ — New Jersey is out of control. Police were put in grave danger in Secaucus this weekend after officers were attacked by a mob of unruly ‘street taker’ participants.
More than 100 vehicles shut down a major intersection in the early hours of Sunday morning as part of a large-scale street takeover, with dozens of participants later surrounding police vehicles, damaging patrol cars, and launching fireworks at officers, according to Secaucus Police.
The chaos unfolded around 2:30 a.m. at the intersection of Secaucus Road and County Avenue, where drivers reportedly blocked traffic, performed donuts, and drove recklessly while crowds gathered to record the illegal spectacle.
Jack Ciattarelli, a candidate for governor in New Jersey called out Governor Phil Murphy regarding the incident.
“Phil Murphy’s New Jersey. At a busy intersection in Secaucus, Hudson County, more than 100 vehicles took over, driving recklessly and doing donuts,” Ciattarelli said. “The chaos also involved dozens of individuals who disrespected law enforcement, even sitting on moving police cars. When I’m Governor, there will be support for law enforcement, this kind of lawlessness will end, and THERE WILL BE CONSEQUENCES.”
His opponent Mikie Sherrill did not comment on the matter. Last week, Sherrill said in an interview with New Jersey State PBA officials that she will stay committed to New Jersey’s Bail Reform Act, and directives set by New Jersey Attorney Generals Gurbir Grewal and Matt Platkin that will continue to handcuff police officers across the state.
When officers responded to the scene, more than 50 individuals surrounded their patrol cars, and some climbed onto the marked vehicles, causing damage. Authorities say fireworks were then fired at and under the police cars in an apparent attempt to escalate the situation.
Backup from multiple nearby jurisdictions — including Weehawken, North Bergen, Hoboken, East Rutherford, Rutherford, and the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office — responded to assist in dispersing the crowd.
No injuries were reported among officers, though police leadership described the incident as an “attack.” Secaucus Police Chief Dennis Miller condemned the events and announced the formation of a multi-division task force to identify those involved.
Officials are asking the public to help identify individuals captured on video during the incident.
