East Haven grocery run ends with $50K Powerball win

New Haven, CT – A routine grocery run turned into a life-changing surprise for a New Haven man who walked out of the ShopRite of East Haven holding a $50,000 winning Powerball ticket, state lottery officials confirmed.

Jose R., whose full name has not been released, purchased the lucky ticket at the ShopRite location in East Haven, just hours before the numbers were drawn. The ticket matched four of the five white balls and the Powerball in Monday night’s drawing, securing him one of the game’s secondary prizes.

The Connecticut Lottery reported that the winning ticket was claimed on Tuesday, and the payout does not include the Power Play multiplier, which could have increased the winnings had it been selected. Still, the prize stands as one of the larger Powerball wins in the New Haven area in recent weeks.

Powerball jackpots have been climbing steadily, drawing increased attention and foot traffic at ticket retailers statewide. Monday’s drawing did not produce a jackpot winner, keeping the top prize rolling forward. However, smaller-tier wins like Jose R.’s continue to create sudden windfalls for players across the state.

The ShopRite of East Haven, located on Hemingway Avenue, is now eligible for a bonus from the Connecticut Lottery for selling the winning ticket. This marks one of several notable wins to come out of the region this summer, as interest in Powerball and other draw games has surged in recent months.

According to state lottery officials, all winners are encouraged to sign the back of their tickets and store them securely before coming forward. There is a 180-day window to claim winnings on draw games such as Powerball.
