Former Maryland resident wins $50K Powerball prize while visiting Gaithersburg
Gaithersburg, MD – A man who once called Maryland home struck it big on a return trip, winning $50,000 in the August 27 Powerball drawing while visiting his son in Montgomery County.
The New Mexico resident purchased his ticket at the Safeway located at 20211 Goshen Road in Gaithersburg. His ticket matched four white balls and the red Powerball, securing the game’s third-tier prize.
He was the only Maryland player to win $50,000 in that drawing, which came as the Powerball jackpot climbed to $815 million.
The winner told Maryland Lottery officials that he plans to put his prize toward a retirement home in New Mexico. He added that he will continue playing Powerball in pursuit of even larger jackpots, including the record-setting $1.8 billion prize up for grabs in the September 6 drawing.
