TOMS RIVER, NJ – A former lifestyle director at a senior living community has been sentenced to state prison after prosecutors say she stole nearly $147,000 and later forged medical documents to delay her case by claiming her child had leukemia.

Ocean County First Assistant Prosecutor Michael T. Nolan, Jr. announced Friday that Alicia Campbell, 37, of Mays Landing, was sentenced to six years in New Jersey State Prison for theft and 18 months for obstruction of justice. The sentences will run concurrently. Campbell must also pay $146,976 in restitution to the Greenbriar Oceanaire Community & Golf Course in Ocean Township, where she worked.

Investigators said Campbell used her position as lifestyle director between January 2019 and January 2022 to divert community funds for her personal use. She allegedly used Venmo to send money from the association’s accounts to third parties, who then funneled it back into her personal bank account. She also used community funds to purchase items for herself.

Campbell was indicted in January 2024 on theft, financial facilitation, and forgery charges. But prosecutors said she stalled court proceedings by falsely claiming her child was undergoing leukemia treatment in Philadelphia, then later at Texas Children’s Hospital. She submitted forged medical letters to the court to back up her claims, investigators said.

Detectives eventually discovered the documents were fabricated, and the hospital confirmed it had never treated Campbell’s child. She was charged in October 2024 with multiple offenses including forgery, obstruction of justice, and making false statements.

Campbell pleaded guilty to theft and obstruction of justice on June 27 and was sentenced by Judge Kenneth T. Palmer on September 5.
