CAMDEN, NJ – A sweeping indictment has charged 13 people accused of running a violent multistate car theft ring that prosecutors say stole or received more than 40 vehicles and was connected to the killing of a Philadelphia police officer.

Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced Friday that brothers Alex Vargas, 27, of Camden, and Alexi Vargas, 24, of Pennsauken, allegedly led the operation, which targeted high-value vehicles across New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, and Delaware. The crew often hit dealerships and airport parking lots, stealing Jeep Grand Cherokees, Dodge Chargers, Dodge Durangos, and Ram trucks, officials said.

Prosecutors allege that once vehicles were stolen, the group reprogrammed keys, altered vehicle identification numbers, and created fraudulent registrations to resell the cars through social media and text message advertising. Investigators linked the enterprise to 41 stolen vehicles, including more than 20 taken in Pennsylvania.

Members of the theft crews allegedly carried firearms and used them during confrontations. Authorities said the group was involved in a September 2023 shooting in Winslow Township, as well as the October 2023 killing of Philadelphia Police Officer Richard Mendez and the assault of Officer Raul Ortiz. Several members already face homicide charges in Philadelphia.

“This was an organized criminal operation that was both sophisticated and dangerous,” Platkin said. “Three of the defendants in this group are charged in Philadelphia for allegedly killing one police officer and assaulting another. Taking down this ring is part of our constant efforts to keep the public safe.”

Those indicted face racketeering, conspiracy, weapons offenses, theft, and promoting organized street crime. If convicted, the most serious charges carry potential sentences of 10 to 20 years in state prison.

Attorney General Platkin credited law enforcement agencies across New Jersey and Pennsylvania for their coordination in dismantling the group.
