HOWELL, N.J. — Moisha’s Discount Supermarket, a Brooklyn-based grocery chain, is opening a new location on Route 9 in Howell, filling the space vacated by Stop & Shop after the company closed two stores in northern Ocean County last year.
Stop & Shop’s Howell store and its County Line Road location both ceased operations in 2024, part of a broader effort by the grocery chain to restructure and reduce underperforming sites in New Jersey.
Moisha’s, known for its low prices and specialty departments, will take over the Howell property. The company began as a small corner store in Brooklyn in 1995 and has since expanded into a full-service supermarket offering grocery delivery and same-day online orders.

The store features several specialized departments, including a meat section led by Chaim and Shia, who have a combined 20 years of experience. “They take pride in offering a wide variety of premium, organic, natural, and hormone-free meats and poultry,” according to the company.
Other departments include a takeout section curated by Executive Chef Yitzchok Roth, a bakery run by veteran pastry chef Avi King, and a fish department managed by Mitch and Nazir, who together bring 30 years of experience.
New Jersey expansion brings Brooklyn flavor
Moisha’s emphasizes customer service and affordability, citing “weekly sales” and “everyday low prices” as part of its core mission since its founding. The Howell location marks the company’s first known expansion into Monmouth or Ocean County.
The store’s arrival comes as national and regional grocers continue to assess their presence across suburban New Jersey, where changing demographics and shopping habits have reshaped the supermarket landscape.
It is not yet clear when Moisha’s will officially open the Howell location, and no announcements have been made regarding hiring or renovation timelines.
The property has remained vacant since Stop & Shop’s closure.
