NEWARK, N.J. — A man accused of killing a woman with his bare hands and dumping her body before fleeing to Canada has been apprehended, according to law enforcement officials.
Authorities allege that 33-year-old Kevin Yancy strangled 26-year-old Gisselle Galeno in her Newark home earlier this year. Her body was discovered dumped in a secluded area in the city shortly after she was reported missing.
According to investigators, Yancy fled the United States following the homicide and entered Canada, prompting a cross-border manhunt involving federal authorities and Canadian law enforcement. After weeks of investigation, he was located and taken into custody.
The incident bares resemblence to an arrest earlier this week.
“He killed her with his bare hands, dumped her body and fled to Canada,” prosecutors said Tuesday. Yancy is now facing extradition proceedings to return to New Jersey to face murder and related charges.
Extradition and legal proceedings underway
Law enforcement officials have not disclosed details regarding the timeline of Yancy’s extradition. Canadian authorities are working with U.S. counterparts to facilitate his return to face trial.
Prosecutors have not announced a motive in the case. Authorities have stated that Yancy and Galeno knew each other, but the nature of their relationship remains under investigation.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office is leading the case and has not commented further on the pending legal proceedings.
The case has drawn public attention due to the violent nature of the crime and the international flight of the suspect.
