Armed carjacking suspect busted after bold daylight attack in Northwest DC

Washington, DC – A 27-year-old Maryland man is in custody after a woman was ambushed in broad daylight during a carjacking in Northwest DC earlier this month, leading to a fast-moving investigation and arrest by local law enforcement.

On Monday, September 1, around 1:09 p.m., a woman had just parked her car in the 1300 block of Buchanan Street NW when two suspects approached her. One pulled a handgun and demanded her keys. Seconds later, the duo sped off in her car, vanishing before police arrived.

Following an investigation, detectives tracked down Trayvon Sykes of Waldorf, Maryland. He was arrested Thursday and charged with armed carjacking in connection to the incident.

The second suspect remains at large, and the case is still under investigation. Police are urging anyone with knowledge about the incident to come forward. A $1,000 reward is being offered for tips leading to an arrest and conviction.
