Newark teen sought for questioning after being shot multiple times in public housing courtyard

Newark, NJ — Police are searching for an 18-year-old Newark man who was shot multiple times in a public housing courtyard and is now wanted for questioning in connection with the same shooting that left him hospitalized.

Zahyir Beard-Brown was found lying in the courtyard of the Bradley Court housing complex on North Munn Avenue just after 10:30 p.m. on Monday, September 15. Officers patrolling the area heard gunfire and discovered Beard-Brown with several gunshot wounds. He was treated at the scene and transported by EMS to University Hospital.

While canvassing the area, officers recovered four 9mm shell casings, two live 9mm ballpoint rounds, and two projectiles. A black Hyundai with temporary New Jersey registration (F397122), believed to be connected to the incident, was towed from the scene for further investigation by the Major Crimes Shooting Response Team.

Beard-Brown is described as a Black male, 5’8″, 145 pounds, with brown eyes and brown hair. Newark Public Safety Director Emanuel Miranda, Sr. said investigators are seeking to locate him for questioning as part of the ongoing probe.

The Department of Public Safety is urging anyone with information on Beard-Brown’s whereabouts to contact the 24-hour Crime Stopper tip line at 1-877-NWK-TIPS (1-877-695-8477). Anonymous tips may also be submitted through the Newark Police Division website.
