Man critically injured after being hit by truck at crash scene on Route 51

ALLEGANY COUNTY, MD – A man was left in critical condition early Saturday after being struck by a pickup truck while standing outside his overturned vehicle on Route 51, according to the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office.

The incident unfolded in the early morning hours when the driver lost control of his vehicle and rolled over in the area of Lower Town Creek Road, blocking the roadway. As he exited the wreck and was being helped by other motorists, a light-colored pickup truck drove by, hit him, and then turned around and fled southbound without stopping.

The injured man sustained serious injuries and was flown by Maryland State Police Trooper 5 helicopter to Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. He was listed in critical condition.

The Sheriff’s Office Crash Team responded to the scene and is actively investigating the hit-and-run. Authorities are urging the public to provide any information about the suspect vehicle, described only as a light-colored pickup truck, that left the scene after striking the pedestrian.

The road remained closed for approximately two hours during the crash response and investigation.

Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including Maryland State Police, Allegany County Emergency Services, Oldtown Fire Department, District 16 Ambulance, Cumberland City Fire Department, Lavale Rescue Squad, and the Maryland State Highway Administration.
