Chesterfield, VA – A mother has been charged with neglect following the death of her 28-year-old son in Chesterfield County. Manisha Nath, 60, is accused of failing to provide proper care for her son, Somak Nath, who reportedly weighed only 65 pounds at the time of his death.
Emergency responders found Somak unconscious in the family’s driveway on Monday. He was later pronounced dead at a local hospital.
An autopsy indicated significant signs of abuse and neglect, as outlined in a criminal complaint. Witnesses reported that Somak had not bathed in a considerable time and his dental health was severely compromised.
Child Protective Services had previously noted that Somak was non-verbal and had autism. Family interviews revealed that he was unable to care for himself and depended on his mother for assistance.
Neighbors had only seen Somak twice in the past year, according to police reports. Emergency personnel responded to a call reporting Somak’s cardiac arrest.
Authorities discovered many signs of neglect after the autopsy and a subsequent search of the residence. The home was described as having little food, excessive black mold, and working toilets were absent.
Manisha acknowledged to law enforcement that Somak could not live independently. She was arrested and charged with abuse and neglect of a vulnerable adult resulting in death.
Manisha remains in custody at the Chesterfield County Jail without bond and is set for a court appearance on November 18.
