Boston, MA – A 36-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a pedestrian and injured another in Jamaica Plain earlier this fall, police announced.
The Boston Police Fugitive Unit took Jose Peguero of Boston into custody on Thursday, concluding a two-month investigation into the October 5 crash on South Huntington Avenue. Officers from District E-13 had responded around 9:38 p.m. that night after two pedestrians were struck by a vehicle that fled the scene. One victim died from their injuries, while the other survived with serious but non-life-threatening wounds.
Detectives with the department’s Fatal Collision Investigative Team identified the suspect vehicle as a Chevrolet TrailBlazer registered to Peguero. Surveillance video reportedly captured the SUV crossing into oncoming traffic and striking the pedestrians in a marked crosswalk before briefly stopping and driving away.
Investigators later located and seized the TrailBlazer. Evidence and witness accounts placed Peguero behind the wheel at the time of the crash and confirmed he made no effort to contact authorities or reclaim the vehicle afterward.
Peguero is expected to be arraigned in West Roxbury District Court on multiple charges, including motor vehicle homicide by reckless operation, leaving the scene after causing death or injury, reckless operation, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and marked lanes and crosswalk violations.
