Pair arrested in New Rochelle after stolen cars and ghost gun found in Garden Street lot

NEW ROCHELLE, NY – Two suspects were arrested early Tuesday after police discovered stolen vehicles, license plates, and a loaded ghost gun in a downtown parking lot, authorities said.

Around 6:10 a.m. on December 30, New Rochelle Police officers responded to a report of a man and woman stealing license plates from parked vehicles at 11 Garden Street. A caller told police the pair arrived in a white Nissan Altima, then entered a black Jeep Grand Cherokee already parked nearby, changed clothing, and later began attaching newly stolen plates to the Altima while discarding the old ones.

Officers quickly located and detained the suspects without incident. Police said the male suspect was carrying a loaded Polymer 80 “ghost gun” with four 9mm rounds. Further investigation revealed that both the white Nissan Altima and the black Jeep Grand Cherokee had been reported stolen out of Connecticut.

The suspects, identified as Jasiah Amari Curry, 21, of Stamford, Connecticut, and Nia Aponte Highsmith, 19, of New Rochelle, were taken to police headquarters and charged with multiple felonies.

Curry faces charges including fourth-degree grand larceny, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, third-degree criminal possession of a weapon related to a feeding device, and second-degree criminal contempt. Highsmith was charged with two counts of third-degree criminal possession of stolen property and fourth-degree grand larceny.

The investigation remains active, and police say additional charges are possible.
