WASHINGTON, D.C. – Raekwon Sutton, 26, of Washington, D.C., was convicted of multiple charges, including assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence. The charges are related to a March 19, 2022, shooting incident in Southeast Washington. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Acting Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) announced the verdict, which was delivered by a jury in the Superior Court of the District of Columbia.

The evidence presented during the trial showed that Sutton, armed with a handgun, visited his ex-girlfriend’s apartment and fired ten shots at the front door while two of her family members were inside. This violent act was preceded by multiple text and voice messages from Sutton, threatening to shoot at the apartment. Post the shooting, he sent further threats, implying he would come back and shoot again.

Sentencing for Sutton is slated for December 1.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Acting Chief Pamela A. Smith praised the efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department in investigating the case. They also acknowledged the support from the U.S. Marshals Service. Special commendation was given to Assistant U.S. Attorneys Yasmin Emrani and Brian Yang for their diligent work in the investigation and prosecution of this case.
