NYC Correction Officer Pleads Guilty to Misconduct

by Leo Canega

NEW YORK CITY, NY – A Department of Correction Officer, involved in a Rikers Island inmate assault, has pleaded guilty to Official Misconduct.

District Attorney Darcel D. Clark announced the officer’s guilty plea and subsequent resignation from the department.

Carl Williams, the officer in question, admitted to the misconduct on Monday. Bronx Supreme Court Justice George Villegas sentenced him to a Conditional Discharge. The investigation, led by the New York City Department of Investigation and the Bronx District Attorney’s Public Integrity Bureau, uncovered the truth behind the October 14, 2021 incident.

Surveillance footage showed Williams striking an inmate at the Otis Bantum Correctional Center. Williams, along with Officers Jatan Das and Roy Dewar, initially reported the inmate as the aggressor.

Das has also pleaded guilty to Disorderly Conduct and resigned. The case against Dewar remains pending.
