Bay Shore, NY – Suffolk County Police revealed that Joseph Leonard, 58, of West Islip, was found deceased in a holding cell at the agency’s 3rd Precinct in Bay Shore at approximately 9 a.m. Friday, April 26.
Leonard’s death occurred after his arrest in Brentwood Thursday evening, April 25, following a suspected drunk driving accident on Pine Aire Drive near 5th Avenue.
It was reported that Leonard, driving a Jeep Wrangler with a revoked license, collided with a stopped vehicle at a light, leading to his discovery unconscious behind the wheel by arriving officers. Following his removal from the vehicle, first aid was given, and Narcan was administered to reverse potential opioid overdose effects.
Leonard was taken to South Shore University Hospital before being transferred to police custody.
After being charged with DWI impaired by drugs and criminal possession of a controlled substance, Leonard remained overnight at the Bay Shore location. His breathing cessation was noticed around 9 a.m. Friday as officers prepared to move him to First District Court. Unfortunately, resuscitation efforts were futile, and he was declared dead at the precinct.
