South Brunswick, NJ – The Attorney General’s Office disclosed the identity of a man fatally shot in an officer-involved incident at a local motel in South Brunswick on January 24. The decedent, 41-year-old Shamar Leggette of Brooklyn, New York, was encountered by law enforcement during a critical operation.
On the afternoon of January 24, at about 2:05 p.m., operatives from the U.S. Marshals Service New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force, in collaboration with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives’ New York office, were executing an arrest warrant against Leggette, who was wanted for multiple felonies. The arrest was planned at a motel located on Route 1 South, in the Monmouth Junction area of South Brunswick.
The confrontation escalated around 2:47 p.m., leading to an exchange of gunfire between Mr. Leggette and the officers. Mr. Leggette was declared dead at approximately 4:29 p.m. Two firearms were retrieved from the vicinity of the deceased. There were no injuries reported among the officers involved in the incident.
