BROOKLYN, NY – A Bronx man has been arrested and charged in connection with the fatal assault and robbery of a 64-year-old Brooklyn man inside the Jay Street subway station earlier this week, according to the New York City Police Department.

Investigators say David Mazariegos, 25, of 711 Magenta Street in the Bronx, was taken into custody Wednesday evening at 5:30 p.m. following an intensive investigation by detectives from the 84th Precinct and Transit District 30.

Mazariegos has been charged with two counts of murder, robbery, and grand larceny in connection with the killing of Nicola Tanzi, 64, of Bay Ridge Parkway in Brooklyn.

Victim found with severe trauma

On Tuesday afternoon around 3:07 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call reporting an unconscious man at the Jay Street–MetroTech subway station. Police found Tanzi unresponsive with visible trauma to his body.

He was transported by EMS to NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in critical condition, where he was later pronounced dead.

Investigation leads to quick arrest

Detectives worked through the night reviewing surveillance footage and witness statements, which ultimately led to Mazariegos’ arrest the following day. The NYPD has not released details regarding the motive or circumstances of the attack but confirmed the case remains under active investigation.

The homicide marks yet another violent episode in the city’s transit system, prompting renewed concern over subway safety.
