REDDING, CA – U.S. Congressman Doug LaMalfa, a Republican representing California’s vast and rural northeastern region, has died unexpectedly at the age of 65, his office confirmed Monday. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed, though colleagues described it as sudden and deeply shocking.
LaMalfa’s passing immediately reshapes the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives, narrowing the already slim Republican majority and triggering a special election in California’s 1st Congressional District. Governor Gavin Newsom is expected to issue a formal call for the election in the coming days.
A lifelong farmer and prominent voice for rural America, LaMalfa had represented the district since 2013, consistently advocating for agricultural communities, wildfire recovery, and conservative fiscal policies. Known for his staunch support of former President Donald Trump, LaMalfa was widely regarded as a reliable defender of Republican priorities and a vocal critic of federal overreach.
President Trump led tributes to the congressman, calling him “a loyal friend, a principled conservative, and a champion for the people of California.” House Speaker Mike Johnson and other GOP leaders praised LaMalfa’s service, noting his reputation for integrity and dedication to his constituents. “Doug LaMalfa never forgot who he worked for — the farmers, the families, and the hard-working people of Northern California,” Johnson said.
Democratic leaders also extended condolences, describing LaMalfa as a committed public servant who worked tirelessly for his district. Flags at the U.S. Capitol and federal buildings across California were ordered to be flown at half-staff in his honor.
LaMalfa’s death leaves Republicans with one fewer vote in an already fragile majority as Congress returns to session, setting up new challenges for the party’s legislative agenda in an election year.
California Congressman Doug LaMalfa, a longtime advocate for rural communities and a key Republican ally in the House, has died suddenly at 65, prompting tributes from both parties and a forthcoming special election to fill his seat.
