NASA Telescope Reveals Largest Batch of Earth-Size, Habitable-Zone Planets Around Single Star

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

The discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water – key to life as we know it – under the right atmospheric conditions, but the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.

“This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.”’

At about 40 light-years (235 trillion miles) from Earth, the system of planets is relatively close to us, in the constellation Aquarius. Because they are located outside of our solar system, these planets are scientifically known as exoplanets.

This exoplanet system is called TRAPPIST-1, named for The Transiting Planets and Planetesimals Small Telescope (TRAPPIST) in Chile. In May 2016, researchers using TRAPPIST announced they had discovered three planets in the system. Assisted by several ground-based telescopes, including the European Southern Observatory’s Very Large Telescope, Spitzer confirmed the existence of two of these planets and discovered five additional ones, increasing the number of known planets in the system to seven.

The new results were published Wednesday in the journal Nature, and announced at a news briefing at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Using Spitzer data, the team precisely measured the sizes of the seven planets and developed first estimates of the masses of six of them, allowing their density to be estimated.

Based on their densities, all of the TRAPPIST-1 planets are likely to be rocky. Further observations will not only help determine whether they are rich in water, but also possibly reveal whether any could have liquid water on their surfaces. The mass of the seventh and farthest exoplanet has not yet been estimated – scientists believe it could be an icy, “snowball-like” world, but further observations are needed.

“The seven wonders of TRAPPIST-1 are the first Earth-size planets that have been found orbiting this kind of star,” said Michael Gillon, lead author of the paper and the principal investigator of the TRAPPIST exoplanet survey at the University of Liege, Belgium. “It is also the best target yet for studying the atmospheres of potentially habitable, Earth-size worlds.”

Earth and Moon as seen from Mars

This composite image of Earth and its moon, as seen from Mars, combines the best Earth image with the best moon image from four sets of images acquired on Nov. 20, 2016, by the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.

Each was separately processed prior to combining them so that the moon is bright enough to see. The moon is much darker than Earth and would barely be visible at the same brightness scale as Earth. The combined view retains the correct sizes and positions of the two bodies relative to each other.

HiRISE takes images in three wavelength bands: infrared, red, and blue-green. These are displayed here as red, green, and blue, respectively. This is similar to Landsat images in which vegetation appears red. The reddish feature in the middle of the Earth image is Australia. Southeast Asia appears as the reddish area (due to vegetation) near the top; Antarctica is the bright blob at bottom-left. Other bright areas are clouds.

These images were acquired for calibration of HiRISE data, since the spectral reflectance of the Moon’s near side is very well known. When the component images were taken, Mars was about 127 million miles (205 million kilometers) from Earth. A previous HiRISE image of Earth and the moon is online at PIA10244.

The University of Arizona, Tucson, operates HiRISE, which was built by Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp., Boulder, Colo. NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of Caltech in Pasadena, California, manages the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter Project for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

Meryl Streep Reminds America She Didn't Die in 2016: Lashes out at Trump During Golden Globes

New Jersey native and Hollywood liberal elitist Meryl Streep took to the podium Sunday night at the Golden Globe Awards to reminds America of two things.   First, the 67 year old actress reminded America she was not a victim of 2016 with her presence on stage, then she used her celebrity status to criticize President-elect Donald Trump.

“I lost my mind sometime earlier this year,” Streep told the audience.

Streep continued the narrative that Donald Trump imitated a disabled reporter Serge F. Kovaleski and bashed him for what she thinks are his views on foreigners.   She rambled off a few names of foreign born actors and actresses and said, “If you kick them all out, all you’ll be left with are football and MMA, which are not the arts.”

Despite Trump never pledging to kick anyone out of America besides those who are here illegally, the elder actress continued her diatribe against him.

“Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose,” Streep said. “We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call him on the carpet for every outrage.”

“Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn’t know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes. She is a Hillary flunky who lost big,” Trump responded. “For the 100th time, I never mocked a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him groveling when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!”

Shore Mourns Loss of Local Hardcore and Thrash Pioneer

by Phil Stilton

TOMS RIVER-In the early half of the 1980’s when most high school kids were jamming to the likes of Motley Crue, Judas Priest and Ratt, a small group of them were laying the groundwork at the Jersey Shore that would redefine the local music scene for future generations.

Lethal Aggression. Photo by the Official Lethal Aggression Facebook page.

One of those early shore area hardcore punk pioneers was John “Saltz” Saltarelli, lead singer for the local hardcore band Lethal Aggression.    After graduating from Brick High School in 1984, Saltarelli and a few mates formed Lethal Aggression, an in-your-face thrash band that defied everything around it, including the burgeoning underground punk scene that was about to explode around the Jersey Shore.

The scene, which still lives on 30 years later, is without a local legend.

The band formed in 1985 and a year later had a small cult-like following.  Nobody else played as hard and as fast as Lethal Aggression did in 1985.  Influenced by bands such as DRI, The Bad Brains, Corrosion of Conformity, Slayer and Metallica, all mostly undiscovered bands at the time, they blended thrash metal with New York style hardcore.

Back then there were only a handful of hardcore bands playing the local scene in Ocean County, including Social Decay and Hogan’s Heroes.

“I can’t tell how upset I feel about this happening. I admired that guy. A true original. An instigator. An agitator,” said Tommy Southard longtime friend and lead guitarist of another shore hardcore pioneer band Social Decay. “A guy that many people loved and looked up to. He was at the ground floor of metal and hardcore and defined NJ crossover.”

In the mid 80’s, there wasn’t much opportunity for those bands to perform, so Southard and others would regularly invite them to play out of his Island Heights basement.  Bigger venues were City Gardens in Trenton and CBGB’s in New York City. But for Lethal Aggression and many of the new bands coming out, Southard’s basement was one step below, or maybe even above those two iconic clubs. At times, hundreds would come from around Ocean County to watch 4 or 5 bands play live and have fun watching, hanging with friends or skating the full sized skateboarding half-pipe in the backyard.   Other times, the police would show and shut the basement shows down because of complaints from neighbors.  Saltz rarely missed a basement show.

Southard and Saltz were the driving mechanism of a uniting force that for years brought many splinter factions of the Jersey Shore hardcore scene together.   It didn’t matter if you were a metalhead, punk, skin or straight-edge, everyone was welcome although not everything always went according to plan.

“Our history is filled with basements and bad decisions,” Saltz once said in an interview with Metalcore fanzine.

Lethal Aggression sometimes played out at local impromptu hardcore shows including infamous nights like the Howell VFW and playing once on the boardwalk in Seaside Park, ironically enough.  They also had a bad reputation that followed the band around around wherever they went.  Some real and some just stuff of local urban legend.  It was a group of disenfranchised and fed up kids who really didn’t care about anything in the world around them and bragged about their drug use, partying and wild lifestyle in the mid 80’s.  Saltz and the band were beyond the epitome of rock and roll.

In 1989, the band was horribly paired together like Felix and Oscar of the television show ‘The Odd Couple’ with New York City “nice guy” “straight-edgers” Youth of Today on European tour.   This twisted science experiment… a clash of cultures toured Europe…together.   Youth of Today guitarist John Porcelly, who later joined the Krishna movement wasn’t all happy about their tourmates after a few gigs.

Saltz, performing with longtime friend, guitarist Tommy Southard. Photo by Tommy Southard.

“I don’t know where they found that band, they were just like alcoholics and users,” Porcelly said of Lethal Aggression.  “You know, crazy friggin’ punks. They ended up getting drunk and beating up the tour manager, so they got kicked off the tour.”

There was also no love lost for Youth of Today from Saltz who called out the iconic New York hardcore do-gooders.

“As far as worst shows, as much as I have to say I loved mostly every show we did in Europe…and it was the best band experience of my life we had to share the stage with those f[expletive] c[male genitalia]  lovin’ hypocrites, Youth of Today, so the experience was bittersweet,” he said in that Metalcore interview. “You know it’s funny I really like YOT’s music, but after spending so much time with them, they were so far from their pseudo-posi message that I just felt like holding a pillow over their faces every night.”

That was how Lethal Aggression rolled until 1991 when the band broke up. Saltz later dabbled with other bands, teaming up with longtime friend Southard at one point.

To this day the band’s first demo tape, remains one of the most sought after New Jersey punk music collectibles.

On Friday December 23rd, Saltz died at his home.  A funeral was held for him on Monday.

Mariah Carey Drops the Ball on New Year's Eve

Will NBC Blame Russia for Mariah Carey’s New Year’s Eve Disaster?

When things go wrong these days, the media tends to blame the Russians, but will ABC blame Russia for the trainwreck of a live lip-synched performance by pop diva Mariah Carey.  Carey pretty much gave up trying to keep up, blaming missing vocals, before walking off the stage after a performance that had Twitter raging in the New Year.

Many joked Mariah was the last celebrity victim of 2016.

Others came to her defense, blaming technical problems and not forgetting the words or as some speculated, being drunk, for the folly.

“Just saw perform. 2016 either claimed another victim OR Russians hackers undermined her campaign as lip syncher of the year,” tweeted Scott Kellen.

Matt O'Ree, New Bon Jovi Guitarist Gives Words of Encouragement to Aspiring New Jersey Musicians

For years, Matt O’Ree could be found at Surf Taco in Jackson entertaining diners with his weekly acoustic set.  This past fall, O’ree, of Holmdel could be found on stage with Bon Jovi after he was chosen to replace 10 year Bon Jovi veteran Bobby Bandiera as the band’s rhythm guitarist.    O’Ree, who formed the blues based Matt O’Ree band, another regular around Ocean County over the years, accompanied Bon Jovi on their 2015 fall world tour.A Letter of Encouragement for Aspiring Musicians in the Jersey Area:

To start things off in the interview with Matt O’Ree, Guitarist for Bon Jovi, and New Jersey Resident, I asked him to give aspiring musicians something they could sink their teeth into while they built their career.

downloadMatt’s Response:

One of the things that I could say for the benefit of upcoming players is the value of teaching their instrument to other students. The guy I studied from encouraged me to teach more, and that’s what really got me started. A lot of the value came in the freedom of making my own schedule, which gave me the time and resources necessary to pursue other gigs and opportunities. At the same time, a teacher is sharing their art and ability with other musicians, essentially offering them to help them along the way.

Through teaching a younger musician a classic, they get to be involved with music that they didn’t grow up with. The teachers refine their skills, and the students learn the techniques of previous masters, you know… Jimmy Page, Jeff Beck, Jimmy Hendrix; those guys.

Tom Rexdale (Toms River), who was my voice teacher, has provided a humbling experience for me, working with him over the last 10 years. I could never pay him back for all for the help that he’s given me. He’s the one who gave me the inspiration of being a lifetime student.

I’ve learned there’s always something to learn from everybody. I’ve learned through teaching my students, I’ve learned through Tom, and I continue to learn. Tom told me once, “If my teacher was still alive, I’d still be going to him.”

Music is just one example of how to be a lifetime student — it’s never a process that ends, because there’s always something else to learn. The freedom of teaching provides income, sharing your art, and you have more time to balance those two out.

In getting hired to play with Bon Jovi, Matt has achieved a milestone in his life. Having the opportunity to talk with him, I wanted to pick his brain for his perspective on the industry, so musicians who hadn’t quite achieved the same level of success might find their way. First, I wanted to discuss the role of Social Media for today’s Musician.

Matt’s Response:

I’d like to think that I got to the next level that I was trying to achieve, and the levels never really end. Once you’re where you wanted to go, you find there’s always more work to be done.

About Social Media and Musicians, it’s both fortunate, and unfortunate. There is so much work that gets thrust onto musicians, and it’s possible to really get sucked into it, and not be able to create art. The widespread acceptance of Illegal downloading, and the freedom of the internet has increased the work load of independent musicians. Self-promoting is a big deal, and you have to do it, but unfortunately, it becomes a lot more work that a musician needs to manage. On the positive side, musicians now have more control over promotional strategies, and what sort of content gets released; it’s a double edged sword.

When you think about making it in the industry in the 60’s, the bottom line is how much work gets put in your instrument and your craft, and how good are you at playing music — Nothing’s changed about the fundamentals — You need a great song, and a great image. Our responsibilities have increased, as well as our freedom; that is the only change. I have more promotion work to do now, than the practice time that I used to be able to have. I’ve had to find a balance, just like everyone else.

It’s not an easy thing to practice, improve your craft, and promote yourself. I will say something that gives me a lot of hope is Adele, It blew me away how many records she sold after her recent release. 14 Mil copies for a national record, I was shocked.

Next, I wanted to dive in a bit deeper about the financial side of things, so we navigated the topics of Illegal Downloading, Live Performances, and Crowdfunding, trying to find how Musicians can Adapt to current conditions.

Matt’s Response:

The best way to adapt… Hmm.

Illegal downloading really puts a damper on a machine. The Artist, the Record Label, the Promotion — they’re all affected; and that affects live performances, as far as attendance is concerned. In the music industry, prices changed from $17 a record, to a $10 record, and a $50 concert to a $150 per concert. I just paid $300 to see Eric Clapton. The show was great, but realistically, whose got $300 to go to a concert?

Concerts are important through. The one thing that the internet can’t replace is seeing the artist in person. People are still getting illegal downloads, but hopefully they can minimize what they take. There’s a whole generation online that have no concept of thinking that pirating music is wrong, because they grew up with the internet; they think that’s normal. The first example that comes to mind is a Plumber. Just think — The next time a plumber comes over to fix your sink — Are you going to pay them?

For Musicians, hopefully your art is a service that helps make a positive impact on people’s lives. The internet can’t replace the live show, and that’s great. I really think the person to person experience is where the future of music is going to be. It’s a tough balance, but the industry is still thriving. Getting people to come to your show is the new focus for the Industry. People still care about the music, they want you to sign their record at the end of the show and that sort of thing. Smaller Venues are great, because you can meet people afterward and talk. Once you start playing stadiums, you don’t really have an opportunity to connect one on one.

Interaction is a big part of art these days. A lot of artists are doing a crowdfunding type of thing to finance a cost of their record. — There is a difference between a CD and a record. You can do a CD at your house, and a record has a difference in quality, and it costs a lot of money to produce a record in a commercial studio. The amount of money is high whether you’re buying the right equipment at home, or just putting something together in a studio. A lot of people are turning to Crowd-Funding to finance production costs.

With Crowd-Funding, you can interact with your audience as a means of saying, “Thanks, for your support.”

In return, your fans are going to get signed copies, a personal letter, or a few t-shirts. High end sponsors can get a free show in their backyard, or have executive credits listed on the record, which helps to recognize their contribution to the project.

The point is to provide an opportunity for your fans to support you creating something special, which can then be shared with the rest of the group. In return, you want to make a personal connection with them, just to say, “Thank you.” Unfortunately, that does cost money, but the connection is worth it.

Having spoken to Tom Rexdale, Matt’s Vocal coach previously, I heard that Matt was playing music for a Charity Benefit, and I wanted him to have an opportunity to share what motivates him to play for a cause.

Matt’s Response:

There’s always a handful of benefits that we participate in during the year. The “Light of Day” is a concert series that raises money to end Parkinson’s disease. I contribute because it’s a great cause, and a terrible disease.

The concert will go on, Thursday, Friday Saturday, if you buy a pass, you can get access through all of the different venues. All of the music will be at Asbury Park, New Jersey.

At the end of our interview, I opened up the floor for any closing comments. He could have said anything, but these are his closing statements:

Matt’s Response:

I can’t thank everybody enough for all of the support that I’ve received after joining Bon Jovi. I’m absolutely overwhelmed with all of the support. People have said, ”It couldn’t have happened to a nicer, or more qualified person,” and that felt great.

A lot of people won’t know how many years I worked and worked to get to the next level. What was amazing to me was the amount of support I received throughout those years. I can’t thank folks enough in return for continuing to believe in me. Someone told me, “All of the hard work does pay off,” and it really did.

Even though the industry has changed a bit, success is about how much work that you put into it. Not everybody gets the ultimate success at the end of the rainbow, but if you work hard, and you never give up, you will succeed. You will achieve your goals. I can honestly say that I’m living proof of that.

Never give up. That’s the best advice that I can give to anybody. Its a nice thing to know that hard work will pay off.
You can go see Matt play with Bon Jovi, and help fight Parkinson’s at the same time!

Dolphin Arena at Great Adventure Demolished

arenaJACKSON-Six Flags Great Adventure began demolishing the Fort Independence arena, the former home of the theme park’s Dolphin Discovery program, last week to make way for a new attraction at the park.

Built in 1974, it was one of the largest original structures at the theme park.   It was originally named “Aqua Spectacle” and seated nearly 2,000 guests.    It featured a 16 foot deep pool for dolphins, seals and sea lions.   It was once the centerpiece attraction for the park.

Once the home of dare-devil aquatic high divers, it was the centerpiece attraction for decades.    During its heydey there were six dolphin shows and six high-diving shows each day.

“The original shows at the Aqua Spectacle were really unique. While most parks that had dolphin shows at the time had two or three performing animals, Great Adventure featured ten performing at one time,” according to GreatAdventureHistory.Com, “The diving shows featured an array of dives from platforms of varying heights, with multiple divers performing stunt dives. The show was capped with the dive from the 100 foot high platform high above the pool.”

The diving shows ended back 2001.  In 2002, the more recent Dolphin Discovery programs were established.  The dolphin shows came to an end after the 2011 season when Cody, one of dolphins starring in the shows died.

Avalon, the last living performing dolphin at the time was sent back to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom in Vallejo, California according to Kristin Siebeneicher, spokeswoman for the park.

The arena will make way for a new rollercoaster named Total Mayhem.

“We are thrilled to unveil one of the newest concepts in roller coaster engineering with Total Mayhem,” said Park President John Fitzgerald. “Six Flags Great Adventure’s world-renowned coaster collection will expand into the realm of insanity – or spinsanity – with this new, vertical coaster that delivers gravity-defying somersaults with utter unpredictability. It is the perfect addition to our dynamic line-up of award-winning roller coasters because this ride delivers next generation, cutting-edge thrills.”

Total Mayhem features a twisting and floating experience onboard 4-D wing vehicles that seat up to 8 passengers per car.  Face-off seats will allow riders to face each other as they tumble head over heels.  A 120-foot-tall, 90-degree hill that is ascended by an elevator-style, chain link lift is accompanied by two beyond 90-degree “raven” drops giving the sensation of free-falling.

Total Mayhem is expected to open in the spring of 2016.
