EVERETT, Wash. – Around 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, the Washington State Patrol Bomb Squad performed an emergent destruction of explosives that were recovered from a residence nearby. The explosive materials were transported to the nearest safe location, the Cathcart Operations Center, for safe destruction.

On Tuesday, a Sheriff’s Office deputy was following up on an investigation regarding reports of fireworks and rockets deploying for the last several months near the 2800 block of 107th Place SE. When the deputy arrived to the location, he contacted a 19-year-old male walking through a wooded area with multiple explosive devices on his person.

During a consent search of the suspect’s residence, an enormous amount of fireworks to include energetic powder was recovered, which prompted a multi-agency response from the WSP Bomb Squad, ATF, and FBI. Several volatile explosives were transported via the bomb transport trailer to the Cathcart Operations Center to do an emergency render safe of the chemicals and completed explosives.

“We assure you that safety is our highest priority,” said WSP Trooper Heather Axtman. “And we removed these explosives from a neighborhood residence in the safest and fastest way possible.”
Charges have been referred on the 19-year-old suspect for possession of explosives.

We do not believe there is any existing danger to the public. This remains an active investigation.
