Jersey City, NJ – Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will join a panel of past governors—including several Democrats—at an upcoming statewide conference focused on criminal justice reform, mental health, and reentry services.
The New Jersey Reentry Corporation’s Annual Reentry Conference is scheduled for Thursday, April 2 at St. Peter’s University in Jersey City. The event will center on trauma, recovery, and the challenges facing individuals returning from incarceration.
Gov. Mikie Sherrill is set to deliver the opening remarks, addressing what organizers describe as the “distinct challenges faced by individuals in reentry, recovery, and veteran communities impacted by trauma.”
The conference will examine how mental health, addiction, and domestic violence intersect with the justice system, emphasizing the long-term effects of trauma.
Bipartisan panel highlights leadership, policy approaches
Christie, a Republican, will appear alongside former Democratic Gov. Jon Corzine, as well as former governors Donald DiFrancesco and Tom Kean, in a panel focused on leadership and public service.
Organizers said the discussion will explore “the advancement of trauma-informed approaches within the justice system,” reflecting a growing emphasis on rehabilitation and reentry support across administrations.

Organizers say the goal is to address the reality that many individuals in the justice system operate “in a prolonged state of survival,” where repeated trauma affects behavior and decision-making.
The New Jersey Reentry Corporation, which is hosting the event, was founded in 2014 during Christie’s administration. The nonprofit provides services including addiction treatment, sober housing, job training, legal assistance, and mental health support.
Christie launched the initiative as part of a broader effort to address the opioid crisis and reduce recidivism by expanding access to treatment and support services.
The organization continues to operate statewide, focusing on removing barriers to employment and helping individuals transition successfully back into their communities.
