Second suspect charged in deadly 2023 DC shooting that left man dead in broad daylight

Washington, DC – A second person has been charged in connection to the fatal shooting of a 46-year-old man in Northwest DC more than two years after the daylight attack stunned the community and launched a homicide investigation.

The case dates back to Sunday, July 30, 2023, when officers responded to a reported shooting around 2:43 p.m. in the city’s Fourth District. There, they found Donald B. Childs suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite emergency crews rushing him to a nearby hospital, he did not survive.

Childs, a Northwest DC resident, was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at the hospital.

More than two years later, on Wednesday, MPD’s Fugitive Unit served a booking order at the DC Jail for 21-year-old Daniel Bangura of Southeast DC. Investigators say Bangura played a role in the shooting and has now been formally charged with First Degree Murder While Armed (Premeditated). After the booking, he was returned to the custody of the DC Department of Corrections.

This marks the second arrest in the case. Previously, 29-year-old Iesha Marks of Bowie, Maryland, was taken into custody and charged with the same offense in the murder of Childs.

Police have not released details about what led to the fatal shooting or the motive behind it. The connection between the two suspects or their relationship to the victim has also not been disclosed.

The arrest comes after months of investigation by homicide detectives working to piece together the events that led to Childs’ death in broad daylight.
