Cumberland police arrest suspect after downtown business damage
Cumberland, MD – Broken storefronts along Baltimore Street greeted business owners at daybreak, and by midmorning police had identified and arrested a local man accused of damaging multiple properties and illegally entering at least one business.
Cumberland Police said calls began coming in around 7:02 a.m. Thursday reporting damage to several Baltimore Street businesses. Officers responding to the area launched an investigation that led them to identify the suspect as James Robert Michael Langway, 37, of Cumberland.
Police said Langway was also found to have unlawfully entered one of the affected businesses. He was later located in the area of George Street, taken into custody, and transported to Central Booking. Langway was seen by a District Court Commissioner for a bond hearing and was held on a temporary commitment as recalcitrant.
Langway faces a wide range of charges, including malicious destruction of property valued at more than $1,000, fourth-degree burglary of a store, theft under $100, possession of burglary tools, disorderly conduct, and multiple additional counts tied to attempted burglary and property damage.
The investigation into the Baltimore Street incidents was handled by the Cumberland Police Department.
