Perth Amboy, NJ – A suspicious cylinder uncovered Wednesday during construction at Borinqueneer Park prompted a swift emergency response before officials determined it posed no risk to the community.
The Perth Amboy Police Department said the object was found Sept. 3 at the former Harry Goldberg & Sons Scrap Metal site on Second Street. Officers implemented emergency protocols and notified partner agencies to assess the situation.
Investigators determined the cylinder was a leftover container from the property’s past as a scrap yard. After confirming there was no public danger, all units cleared the scene within two and a half hours.
Cleanup at the site is ongoing under supervision of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Crews are laying a protective layer of screened soil, with work expected to be finished by Sept. 8. A retaining wall and asphalt cover will follow as part of the remediation project.
